A Juliet balcony is a barrier, not a balcony — a guarding across a set of upper-floor doors that lets them open onto a view without anyone stepping out. Because it's the only thing between a person and a drop, it's a safety-critical component governed by BS 6180 (barriers in and about buildings) and the Building Regs. Here's what the standard actually requires so your balustrade passes and stays safe.
The short answer
For a domestic Juliet balcony, the barrier must be at least 1,100 mm high, withstand a horizontal line load of 0.74 kN/m, use laminated safety glass, and leave no gap a 100 mm sphere can pass through. Get those four right and the rest follows.
Barrier height
The guarding has to be high enough to stop someone toppling over it. For dwellings, the barrier protecting a level change like an upper-floor doorway is 1,100 mm minimum measured from finished floor level. This is the height the balustrade top rail (or the top of frameless glass) must reach — a point worth checking against the door threshold and floor build-up on survey, not assuming.
The load — the number that governs the fixings
BS 6180 and the structural loading codes require the barrier to resist a horizontal imposed load applied at the top. For domestic and residential balconies that figure is 0.74 kN/m (a uniformly distributed line load along the top of the barrier). That load is what really sizes the job: the glass thickness, the posts or clamps, and — critically — the fixings into the structure. A balustrade is only as strong as what it's bolted to, so the substrate (masonry, timber, steel) and the anchor spec matter as much as the balustrade itself. Higher-occupancy or public settings carry heavier loads, so confirm the use class.
Glass type — laminated, not just toughened
Where glass forms the barrier it must be a safety glass, and for a guarding the right choice is laminated glass (often toughened-laminated). The reason is containment: if toughened glass alone breaks it disintegrates and the barrier is gone, whereas laminated glass holds together on its interlayer and keeps guarding the opening even when cracked. That "residual strength" after breakage is exactly what a safety barrier needs.
Infill gaps — the 100 mm rule
Guarding that could protect children must not have gaps a small child could get through or become trapped in. The rule of thumb is the 100 mm sphere: no opening in the balustrade — including the gap under the bottom rail and between any posts or balusters — should allow a 100 mm ball to pass. For a frameless or full-glass Juliet this is easy; for framed or bar designs it's the detail that catches people out.
Common ways a Juliet balcony fails to comply
- Barrier under 1,100 mm once floor finishes are added.
- Toughened-only glass where laminated is required for containment.
- Fixings under-specified for the 0.74 kN/m load — the balustrade is fine, the anchors aren't.
- A gap over 100 mm beneath the bottom rail or between bars.
Framed, frameless or bar?
All three can comply — the choice is about looks and structure. Frameless glass gives the cleanest, most uninterrupted view and suits modern elevations. Framed glass (top and bottom rail with posts) spreads load and can be easier to fix on some substrates. Bar or balustrade designs suit traditional and heritage settings. Whichever the customer prefers, the four requirements above don't change.
